Does balancing the budget matter? Well, ask Greece whether they should balance their budget. Once the riots die down, you may have an answer. In the meantime, the world's lenders think Greece will default on its debts. In ten years time, without action from the US government (big or small), the same fear may affect the US power to borrow.

So, right now, states cannot raise taxes and face paying out on entitlements. The majority are licensing more gambling. The levy is not counted as a tax and is politically acceptable. Stanford Wong self-published his first book, Professional Blackjack, in 1975. It was later published by the Gambler's Book Club in Las Vegas, then revised and expanded numerous times and published by Wong's own company, Pi Yee Press.

Wong is widely regarded as one of the sharpest analysts of systems and methods for beating the casinos. In Professional Blackjack, he described a never-before-revealed table-hopping style of playing shoe games, a method of play now known as wonging. Professional Blackjack had a profound impact on serious players because it provided card counters with an easy yet powerful method for attacking the abundant four-deck shoe games that had taken over Las Vegas. Many pros still think of card-counting opportunities as "pre-Wong" and "post-Wong."

In his second book, Blackjack in Asia-a book priced at $2,000 and one of the rarest gambling books sought by collectors today - Wong discusses the unique blackjack games he had discovered in Asian casinos as a professional player, along with the optimum strategies he had devised for beating them. The book also included underground advice for exchanging currencies in these countries on the black market, as well as an account of his own hassles with customs officials when he attempted to leave the Philippines with his winnings. Of all of Wong's books, this is my personal favorite, as it reveals more of his anti-establishment personality than any of his later books.

In 1980, Wong published Winning Without Counting, priced at $200, and again, on a personal note, this is my second favorite book by Wong (and another collector's item if you can find one). He not only discusses many hole card techniques that had never before been mentioned in print-s-front-loading, spooking, and warp play-but he also delved into many clearly illegal methods of getting an edge over the house, including various techniques of bet-capping, card switching, card mucking, etc. He was widely criticized by those in the casino industry for the amusing way in which he discussed and analyzed such techniques, but anyone with half a brain could see that he was merely informing players with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.

Wong subsequently published Tournament Blackjack (1987), Basic Blackjack (1992), Casino Tournament Strategy (1992), Blackjack Secrets (1993), and since 1979 has published various newsletters including Current Blackjack News, aimed at serious and professional players.

Edward Oakley Thorp is widely regarded, by professional players as well as the general public, as the Father of Card Counting. It was in his book, Beat the Dealer, first published in 1962, that he presented his Ten-Count system, the first powerful winning blackjack system ever made available to the public. All card-counting systems in use today are variations of Thorp's Ten-Count.

When Thorp's book became a best seller, the Las Vegas casinos attempted to change the standard rules of blackjack, but their customers would not accept the changes and refused to play the new version of the game. So, the Vegas casinos went back to the old rules, but switched from dealing hand-held one-deck games to four-deck shoe games, a change that the players would accept. Unfortunately for the casinos, in 1966 Thorp's revised second edition of Beat the Dealer was published. This edition presented the High-Low Count, as developed by Julian Braun, a more powerful and practical counting system for attacking these new shoe games.

In 1961, Thorp and C. Shannon jointly invented the first wearable computer, a device that successfully predicted results in roulette. Thorp has an M.A. in Physics and a Ph.D. in mathematics, and has taught mathematics at UCLA, MIT, NMSU, and U.C. Irvine, where he also taught quantitative finance. For many years Ed Thorp wrote a column for the now-defunct Gambling Times magazine. Many of these columns were collected in a book titled The Mathematics of Gambling, published in 1984 by Lyle Stuart.

Keith is not well known to the general public, but among professional players he is revered as an electronics genius who has spent more than thirty years devising high-tech equipment-computers, video cameras, and communication devices-to beat the casinos.

Blackjack was his initial target, and always remained his prime target. His first blackjack computer, which he completed in 1972, weighed fifteen pounds. Over the years, as computer chip technology developed, his computers became smaller, faster, and lighter. By the mid-1970s, he had a device that weighed only a few ounces that could play perfect strategy based on the exact cards remaining to be dealt. If it were up to Keith, his son Marty's name would be right along his in the Blackjack Hall of Fame, as the two have worked as partners since Marty was a teenager. Max is the author of Comp City, first published in 1994, with an expanded second edition published in 2002. In this groundbreaking book, Max exposed techniques even non-counting players could use to get an advantage over the casinos by exploiting weaknesses in the casinos' comp systems. Lawrence Revere was both an author and a serious player. He died in 1977. His only book, Playing Blackjack as a Business, initially published in 1969, is still in print. If you look at the "true count" methods being employed pre-Revere, you will see why Revere was inducted into the hall of fame.

The earlier methods were cumbersome and mentally fatiguing to use. In the second edition of Beat the Dealer, in which Thorp first proposed the Hi-Lo Count, he mentioned a simplified method of using the count, though he failed to develop it as a full system. Revere had a leap of brilliance that led him to come to the conclusion that the simplified method of obtaining a "true count" that Thorp had mentioned could be fully developed and employed with the most powerful of point count systems. Revere's method was so simple compared to the alternatives, it has been employed by virtually every serious balanced point count system developer since, including Stanford Wong, Ken Uston, Lance Humble, Bryce Carlson, Arnold Snyder, and others. As a serious player, Revere's knowledge of blackjack included such esoteric techniques as shuffle tracking and hole card play.

Chelsea clinched the Premier League title with a performance worthy of champions, as they put on a clinical display at Stamford Bridge that proved far more than a dejected Wigan Athletic side could cope with.

It was Nicolas Anelka who started the party ahead of schedule on Sunday, taking barely five minutes to lash a cushioned header beyond Mike Pollitt. Referee Martin Atkinson didn't hesitate in pointing to the penalty spot, and compounded the punishment on Roberto Martinez's side by dismissing Caldwell. When the protests died down Lampard made no mistake from 12 yards out, blasting a trademark strike low to his left beyond Pollitt's despairing dive.
Wigan showed glimpses of their commendable attacking instincts throughout the game, but were agonisingly unable to find a final through ball that could have created any response to their opponents' goals. Hugo Rodallega — so influential in the Latics' victory in the reverse fixture at the DW Stadium in September — was a frequent threat to the Blues' defence, causing problems with his pace and movement, but was ultimately undone by a lack of quality service.

Defensively, meanwhile, Wigan showed why they struggled to ensure their league survival for much of the campaign. Caldwell's 30 minute cameo was poor, and his centre-back partner Gohouri was little better all game. Beyond the two mishaps they survived the first half reasonably well, but in the second half their lack of quality was ruthlessly exposed.

Chelsea were first to emerge from the tunnel after the half-time break, and were also the first to threaten in the second half, with only a dubious offside decision ending some early danger after Lampard's flick clattered Pollitt's crossbar.

But it didn't take much longer for Ancelotti's side to get their third, with Kalou once again at the heart of the good work. The Ivorian slipped the ball to Lampard down the right-hand side of the box, and the Englishman completed a fine one-two as he slide a low cross between Wigan's defenders to find the striker unmarked, who made no mistake in passing a shot beyond the 'keeper into the bottom corner from all of five yards out.

Three minutes later they had a fourth, with Anelka grabbing his second of the game. Branislav Ivanovic popped a fine cross into the Frenchman at the back post, and the striker showed his first goal was no fluke as he hit another sweet first-time volley beyond Pollitt, this time at his far post.

It was a wonderful finish, the best of the game, and the players celebrated it as if they finally believed the title had been secured.
Ancelotti immediately made changes, withdrawing the impressive Kalou for Joe Cole and the solid Ivanovic for Juliano Belletti, in what is likely to be the out-of-contract Brazilian's penultimate game for the club.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has revealed that talks regarding a new contract for him at Stamford Bridge have been put on hold until the end of the season.

The German international is hoping to be awarded a new two-year deal in west London, but acknowldges that there is little likelihood of any meaningful progress until the summer.

He is not overly concerned, however, as a number of senior players are in a similar position at the moment at Stamford Bridge.

He also believes that he still has plenty to offer personally and could probably manager another two seasons at the top level.

"There are no contract talks with [club owner Roman] Abramovich for me now, and there are other stars at Chelsea who are in the same situation," Ballack told Bild.

"Even coach Carlo Ancelotti does not know anything.

It was hard luck on Black Cats goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who pulled off five fine second-half saves, three of them from Newcastle United old boy Craig Bellamy, to protect the lead given to his side by Kenwyne Jones' ninth-minute header.

Sunderland were within seconds of clinching back-to-back Barclays Premier League victories for the first time since December 2008, a run of 48 matches.

However, they were warmly applauded from the pitch by a crowd of 41,398 after very nearly adding City's scalp to those of Liverpool and Arsenal five days after ending their 14-match winless league run against Bolton Wanderers.

The visitors, who have a match in hand on fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, are now just two points adrift, but they came desperately close to leaving the north east empty-handed despite rallying well after a dismal first-half display.

Bellamy might have equalised himself twice inside the last 10 minutes, but lost out in one-on-one battles with the Black Caps goalkeeper on both occasions.

Portsmouth administrator Andrew Androuikou has named a price for any potential buyers of the struggling Premier League club according to BBC Sport.

"I think buyers will need in excess of £30m to buy the club," said Andronikou.
He continued: "It's a good opportunity to buy a club with a great history and I really want to focus on finding the right buyer.

"The Premier League have offered their hand and I'm very comfortable that the club will be starting next season."

Andronikou will be present when the Premier League chairmen convene on Thursday to decide whether the clubs would permit Portsmouth to sell players and then take them back on loan for the rest of the term.

This would help Pompey avoid fielding a decidedly weaker team for the rest of the season, which might give the clubs that play them the unfair advantage of playing a much weaker squad than the rest of the Premier League have already encountered.

With reported debts in the £60-£70m range, Pompey made history last week by becoming the first club in the history of the English top flight to enter administration, but the club administrator is hopeful that the team will play on.

"I know we have the wherewithal to finish the season, though there will have to be cost cutting from top to bottom," said Andronikou.

If title hopefuls Arsenal really want to prove they don't have the soft underbelly they are often accused of having, there are few better - or tougher - places to do so than on Stoke City's ground, where the home team and their fans positively ooze the sort of team spirit that can wither opponents of a less committed disposition.

Unbeaten this year, comfortably positioned in mid-table some 11 points above the relegation zone, and through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup where they will attempt to ruffle Chelsea's feathers, Stoke City under Tony Pulis continue to defy the odds.

And they will relish the chance to knock Arsenal off course once again when the Gunners visit the Britannia Stadium knowing they must beat the Potters - and then win their remaining games - if they are to be more than the support act in this season's Premier League title race behind headliners Chelsea and Manchester United.

In the simplistic, sound-bite language of the tabloids, Stoke and Arsenal are polar opposites, the chalk and cheese of the Premier League. Meetings between the two teams are couched by the media in terms of artisans v artists, cloggers v culture club, Route One meets Route 66.

Yet things are rarely that straightforward. Only this week, after they overcame Manchester City with some brio, Stoke earned unaccustomed plaudits for their attacking flair. Ryan Shawcross stressed the team's creativity and panache, and even Arsene Wenger acknowledged that the Potters have added several positive dimensions to their game since winning promotion to the top-flight in 2008. There was certainly both guile and style about their first and third goals against the Citizens, scored by Dave Kitson and Tuncay Sanli, respectively.

Nevertheless, few would claim that Stoke don't thrive on the physical aspects of any tactical battle; robust and direct were words seemingly coined for them. Their trademark second goal on Wednesday, a prodigiously long throw by Rory Delap headed into a net vacated by the onrushing, unnerved Shay Given, epitomised Pulis's team.

Arsenal will know exactly how Given and his defenders felt. They have been sucker-punched by the same tactic at the Britannia themselves, on each of their two previous visits. Yet knowing what is coming your way and countering it effectively appear to be two rather different things.

The Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Stoke in the corresponding fixture last season, while last month they succumbed 3-1 to an impressive Potters' performance in the FA Cup. Admittedly the Arsenal team for that recent cup tie was sprinkled with inexperience in the form of Craig Eastmond, Francis Coquelin and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas; but they know they face a stern physical and psychological test on Saturday in an intimidating arena.

It is a test they can't afford to fail. Stoke have only lost three times at home this season, and two of those were against Chelsea and Manchester United, who both had to dig deep to earn the points. A victory for Arsenal could take Arsene Wenger's side back to within two points of Manchester United and give them the confidence of a third straight win in the league. Defeat will leave them more concerned about fending off the teams below them than catching the two above.

It certainly won't be easy. Stoke are one of only two clubs yet to suffer a Premier League defeat during 2010 (Aston Villa are the other), and they are looking to extend an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Indeed, if they avoid defeat on Saturday it will be the Potters' best run in the top-flight for nearly 36 years. And it is 28 years since the Gunners last won a league match on Stoke turf, where they go hoping to avoid a fifth straight league defeat.

Winger Matthew Etherington, who excelled against Arsenal in the recent FA Cup tie, has an outside chance of playing after returning to light training following a knee injury.

Defenders Abdoulaye Faye and Andy Wilkinson are back after serving suspensions bans, which probably means that Dean Whitehead will revert to midfield after playing at right-back against Manchester City.

Danny Higginbotham is unlikely to feature because of a back injury.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Stoke

Manager Tony Pulis reckons striker Dave Kitson has "come back from the wilderness", grabbing his chance in Stoke's last two games after not having featured following his two-month loan spell at Middlesbrough. Kitson, 30, had failed to score in his first 18 games for the Potters, and was even loaned back to Reading, who'd sold him to Stoke for £5.5 million in summer 2008. But he has notched seven goals so far this term, including three while on loan to Boro and the opener in midweek. As a Tottenham Hotspur fan, he'll be particularly happy to inflict damage on their north London rivals Arsenal.

However, the Gunners are likely to be even more concerned about trying to deal with the long throws speared in by Rory Delap. His delivery set-up Stoke's top scorer Ricardo Fuller for the opening goal just 70 seconds in to last month's FA Cup tie, and the 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international - born in Sutton Coldfield and with spells at Carlisle United, Derby County, Southampton and Sunderland on his CV before he became a cult hero at Stoke - also provided the distinctive assists for both goals in last season's home win against the Gunners.

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger's side have not been endowed with goalkeeping excellence this season, so the Frenchman will be looking for a performance of greater composure and assurance from Manuel Almunia, who is expected to start. The Spaniard will need to be dominant and decisive in his area, especially when throws and corners fly in on vicious trajectories. Wenger was apparently interested in signing Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen in January, so a comparison between the two shop-stoppers will be instructive. Given that less than total confidence in the man behind them is cited as a factor in the apparent nervousness of Arsenal's defence, it is time Almunia took command of his gloves.

Further forward, if he plays, Theo Walcott also has plenty to prove. He has pace to burn, and certainly enough to unsettle a Stoke defence over-stocked with centre-halves; but Walcott has been singularly unconvincing in this injury-ravaged season when it comes to his final ball. Whether crossing or shooting - and choosing the right option is the critical first step - the England World Cup hopeful must start delivering.

PREDICTION

It is no exaggeration to bill this game as Arsenal's toughest assignment among their remaining fixtures. If they can stand up and be counted against whatever Stoke throw at them; if they can tackle both the atmosphere and their opponents; if they can out-muscle, out-pass and out-think Stoke, then they will stand an excellent chance of out-scoring them too. But it won't be easy.

Chelsea Goalkeeper Petr Cech Out For A Month

The Stamford Bridge club have revealed that following scans on the injury, the goalkeeper will be out for “three to four weeks”.

Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Petr Cech will be out for a month after suffering a torn calf muscle.
Cech went down clutching his leg midway through the second half of Chelsea's Champions League second round clash with Inter Milan on Wednesday night and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed after the match that Cech had suffered a torn calf muscle, but admitted he hoped Cech would be back for the second leg.

However following further scans Cech will miss the second leg, as well as Chelsea's clash with Manchester City on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard Praises Spirited Showing Against Unirea Urziceni

Clint Dempsey Backs 'On Fire' Bobby Zamora For England

“Roy Hodgson has done well," he said. "He has changed things around for us. The whole coaching staff and deserve credit and some of the key players have really stepped up.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy believes that Stephen Ward has to continuously prove his mettle in the Premier League if he is to make the Republic of Ireland squad.

The manager of the Boys in Green, Giovanni Trapattoni, did not name Ward in his 23-man squad for the game against Brazil next Tuesday, despite the 24-year-old being the only left-back to play regularly in the top-flight.

"Trapattoni picks the squad," McCarthy said, according to The Express & Star.

"If Stephen Ward is playing well for me in the Premier League – which he is – then it’s up to the manager of the national team to decide to pick him, not me.

"All Wardy can do is what he’s doing for me. I don’t say anything because if anyone says anything to me about my squad, I tell them to ‘Foxtrot Oscar.’

"No one else picks my team and I have no intention of trying to pick anyone else’s."

He added: "Kevin Foley was Player of the Year for us last season and kept being picked in squads without playing, so Wardy just has to keep playing in the Premier League.

Ashley Cole feels that he has been the victim of injustice at Chelsea and is on a collision course with the club's hierarcy, according to a report from The Times.

The player feels that the reported £400,000 the club want to fine him is unfair, after reports surfaced of his sexual adventuring whilst away on club trips.

Cole is alleged to have smuggled women into the team hotel on club trips, and is believed to have misled Steve Atkins, the club's director of communications, on one such instance during the Blues' pre-season tour to the USA last summer.

The left-back will reportedly express his sense of his injustice when he meets Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay for his disciplinary hearing this week.

He is yet to apologise to Atkins, and the deepening rift could apparently see him leave Stamford Bridge.

There is reportedly real anger at the club that Cole deceived a club official on at least one occasion, and brought women back to team hotels at least three times.

Chelsea also maintain that the matter does not bear comparison with the recent lurid revelations of events in John Terry's life. Terry, they insist, may have erred but his alleged affair was carried out in his own time and in situations with no relevance to the club.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are believed to be interested should Cole decide to leave Stamford Bridge, though Sky Sports News is reporting that there are no underlying issues behind the scenes at Chelsea.

Manchester United are leading the race to sign Queens Park Rangers wonderkid Raheem Sterling, the Daily Mail reports.

The attacking midfielder is believed to have generated a number of Premier League admirers, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Fulham, but it appears that United head the queue for the player.

The Red Devils youth chief Brian McClair was a VIP guest at Sterling's under-18 game at the weekend, as he made a final check on the promising star.

Sterling, who is still only 15-years-old, was born in Jamaica but brought up in London.

United believe he is a huge prospect and could be a household name for years to come.

Burnley to discover total payment owed to Manchester United following Richard Eckersley deal

Burnley will discover later this week how much they must pay Manchester United for defender Richard Eckersley, after the two clubs attended an independent tribunal on Monday to decide on a fee for the player.

The 20-year-old joined the Clarets in July on a four-year deal after his contract at Old Trafford expired.

The tribunal committee are set to inform Burnley and United of its verdict in the next few days, and Clarets boss Brian Laws is confident of a positive outcome.

"We had a very good hearing and put our case across," Laws told the clubs official website.

"We remain hopeful of a positive outcome, but we must now await the verdict."

Eckersley, who progressed through the youth ranks at Old Trafford has made three appearances for Burnley this season.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has targeted a £3.5million deal for Portsmouth midfielder Marc Wilson, according to the Daily Mail.
The transfer would depend on whether the Premier League change their mind and allow the cash-strapped club to sell players outside the transfer window.

Portsmouth are reportedly £60million in debt and facing a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs in the High Court early next month.

The Premier League however, revealed on Saturday that they would not allow the troubled club to sell players outside of the transfer window.

Chelsea will offer a new contract to Miroslav Stoch, according to the midfielders agent.

The Slovakia international is currently on a season-long loan with Dutch side FC Twente, but is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2011.

The 20-year-old is regarded by Chelsea as an exciting prospect for the future and his representative, Milan Lednicky claims they would like to extend his current contract with the club.

"It should be a long-term contract," Lednicky told the player's official website.

"However, it is of no importance to reveal more at the moment. The situation will be clearer some time during the spring."

Bridge ends England career

Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge has today announced that he will not be available for selection by England due to the situation surrounding the revelations concerning John Terry's alleged affair with his former partner.

The defender feels that the situation has become potentially a source of division within the Three Lions squad and has made his position "untenable".

Bridge has released a statement from his lawyers confirming his withdrawal.

"I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks," the statement reads.

"It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.

"I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."
The news follows hard on the heels this morning of the revelation that Rio Ferdinand's back problem will keep him out of next week's Three Lions friendly with Egypt.

Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool: Roberto Mancini's Citizens Held By Reds

Manchester City drew 0-0 with Liverpool at the City of Manchester Stadium this afternoon. Chances were few and far between, Emmanuel Adebayor having the pick with a long range effort near the start of the second half.

After a cautious start by both sides Liverpool started to push forward and created a couple of half-chances. Joleon Lescott was forced to head clear a Steven Gerrard free-kick into the box as Martin Skrtel was lurking, before Lucas Leiva was caught marginally offside after a pass from midfield. The Argentinian had a one-on-one with Shay Given but was stopped in his tracks by the assistant's flag.

Manchester City pounced on the counter-attack in the 11th minute. Attacking down the right, Pablo Zabaleta looked to play in Shaun Wright-Phillips but the Englishman went too early and was flagged offside.

Liverpool continued their drive forward and Maxi Rodriguez had a shot on goal after a flick on by Gerrard on the left. The Argentinian fired wide of the left-hand post with a snapshot, he was under pressure and won Liverpool a corner that the Citizens cleared.

City began to venture forward, attacking down the flanks with Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson. The former Middlesbrough winger looked especially lively, interlinking with Stephen Ireland to find space on the left. His crossing was wayward at times, and he wasted a decent opportunity to get the ball into the box in the 22nd minute, launching well over the crossbar.

The game opened up with attacks at either end of the field, both sides engineered good passing movements but they resulted in very little in the way of scoring opportunities. Zabaleta had a optimistic strike on goal from the edge of the Liverpool penalty area but it deflected wide of the right-hand post off Adebayor.

Johnson switched flanks with Wright-Phillips and continued to enjoy good possession. Adebayor fed the ball to the 22-year-old on the right and Johnson did well to create space, cutting back towards his own goal before swinging a cross towards the back post. It was over hit and went out for a goal kick.

The atmosphere became increasingly rambunctious as half-time approached, with Gerrard being yellow carded for a crude challenge on Lescott in the right-hand side of the City penalty box. The crowd seemed to be becoming frustrated with the lack of incision from the home side.

The second half started with City putting Pepe Reina under pressure from a couple of corners. The Spaniard punched away nervously from the first but collected well from the second with Adebayor in the near vicinity.

City had the ball in the back of the net in the 50th minute, Ireland drove down the right flank and played the ball inside to Adebayor. Liverpool closed on the Togolese forward as he tried to spread the ball outside to the left, it was blocked by a Liverpool foot and spilled to Ireland, who had ghosted into the right-hand side of the box. Ireland made no mistake and slotted past Reina at the near post, but was greeted by the assistant's raised flag as he peeled away to celebrate. He was adjudged to be offside: 0-0.

The home side's momentum was interrupted after an odd injury to Ryan Babel. The Dutchman went to close down a cross on the right and was caught full in the face by the attempted ball in. He was down for several minutes as physios assessed a potential neck injury but was fine to continue.

City had a good chance on the hour mark, they attacked down the left and crossed into the middle where Ireland knocked the ball back to Adebayor on the edge of the area. The Togolese forward controlled and then rifled towards the bottom left-hand corner of the goal, Reina dived at full stretch and managed to divert the ball wide. He was furious Adebayor was allowed to get the strike on goal and admonished his defenders.

Both managers made attacking substitutions, Rafael Benitez replaced Maxi with Yossi Benayoun before Roberto Mancini brought on Craig Bellamy in favour of Wright-Phillips.

Liverpool worked a decent opening for Gerrard in the 74th minute, Babel drove inside from the left and played the ball inside to Dirk Kuyt who quickly shifted the ball to Gerrard on his left. The Liverpool skipper sold his marker a dummy to work the ball onto his left foot before firing towards the City goal. The shot was powerful but straight at Given, who made a comfortable save.

This was Babel's last involvement, as the Dutchman was taken off to allow Fernando Torres to come off the bench.

Adebayor had two chances to put City in the lead as the last ten minutes approached. He broke free of the Liverpool defence and drove towards the penalty area, just as he was about to shoot Skrtel recovered and made a last ditch tackle on the Togolese forward to concede a corner. From the set piece the ball came to Adebayor, who headed over the bar from close range.

The Citizens had a late shout for a penalty turned down by referee Peter Walton as Daniel Agger nudged Adebayor as a diagnol ball was thrown towards the right-hand side of the penalty area. Adebayor went down more in hope than expectation, despite the roar from the crowd.

There were five minutes of stoppage time but neither side could capitalise, with substitute Abdisalam Ibrahim firing wide of the left-hand post for City in the final minutes.

Aston Villa 5-2 Burnley: Villans Run Rampant Against Struggling Clarets

Burnley remain in the bottom three after Aston Villa thumped Brian Law's men at Villa Park as they continue their push for the final Champions League spot.

The visitors took the lead through Steven Fletcher inside the opening ten minutes after a well worked move but Ashley Young levelled for Aston Villa on the half hour mark with a low right footed drive.

A crazy fifteen minute spell in the second half saw Villa hit four goals through two Stewart Downing efforts with Emile Heskey and Gabriel Agbonlahor putting the result out of any doubt. Martin Paterson then added a late consolation in stoppage time.

Burnley travelled to Villa Park with the worst away record in the Premier League looking to catch Aston Villa dreaming of next weekend's League Cup final.

The Clarets had picked up just a single point on the road this season before today’s game but Brian Laws’ men were looking to capitalise on the defeats of some of their nearest rivals.

Meanwhile a handsome win for Aston Villa would have seen them steal fourth place in the race for the final Champions League place ahead of Liverpool's trip to Manchester City.

The first chance of the game fell to Stilian Petrov; after a patient passing move in the Burnley half, the Bulgarian was teed up on the edge of the box but his effort flew wide.

Just moments later Burnley took the lead when on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork slid in David Nugent who raced into the box before squaring the ball to Steven Fletcher who tapped in at the back post unmarked.

Nugent was looking busy and the on-loan Portsmouth forward hit a long range strike that took a wicked deflection and could have gone anywhere but the ball looped wide of Brad Friedel's goal.

Villa were struggling to get into the game and had no real chances to speak of in the opening twenty minutes other than a half-chance that fell to James Milner on the edge of the box but his volley sailed high and wide.

Martin O'Neill's men were using the pace of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing down both flanks to great effect and Emile Heskey got on the end of a cross from the latter but his header went wide of Brian Jensen's right hand post.

A long range effort from Villa centre back James Collins was hit well but straight at Jensen who saved the Welshman's strike comfortably.

Villa levelled the scores just after the half hour mark when Burnley failed to react quick enough to a short Ashley Young corner. He played the ball to Milner before receiving the ball back and hitting a low drive through a crowded box leaving Jensen no chance.

The home side enjoyed the majority of the possession for the remainder of the first half but couldn’t make it count and the teams went into the break level.

Burnley started the second period in the same vein as the opening half but failed to carve out any clear chances in the first ten minutes as they had done previously.

Instead it was Villa who look the lead, a long ball forward was flicked onto Young who raced clear but was eventually crowded out by the recovering Burnley defence. The winger played the ball square into the open space and Stewart Downing raced on to the ball and struck his shot low into the left hand corner.

Gabriel Agbonlahor should have doubled the lead moments later after breaking clear but Jensen saved well after a one on one with the Villa striker. However, the saved effort came out to Milner who played the ball to Downing, the former Middlesbrough man turned well and his strike took a deflection leaving Jensen helpless as it rolled into the net.

Downing may have had a sensational five minute hat-trick when Young played a corner straight out to the 25-year-old who volleyed first time but Jensen saved well.

Emile Heskey did compounded further misery on Burnley minutes later after great work by Agbonlahor down the left hand side, the striker crossed the ball low into the area and Heskey finished from close range.

Strike partner Gabriel Agbonlahor then got his name on the scoresheet five minutes later after a flowing move by Villa saw Milner cross for the 23-year-old to bundle home from close range.

Burnley continued to threaten from long distance but Friedel was rarely tested. Martin Paterson tapped in in stoppage time but Villa strolled home for a comfortable win.

Chelsea Keeper Petr Cech Predicts More Goals To Come From Didier Drogba

Petr Cech thinks Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is bound to beat his personal best tally of 33 goals in a season this year.

The 'keeper feels that the Ivorian frontman is at his sharpest currently, and that when the striker is fully-fit there are few in the world who can match him.

"Didier has been brilliant all season. He can beat that 33-goal record. You can see he is in form. He is fit and he is confident," said Cech, according to Press Association Sport.

"If he stays fit, I am sure he will get more goals. It's always difficult to say if anyone is in the best form of their career.

"Sometimes, if a striker is not scoring as many goals, they can still be in good form.

"But Didier has been brilliant for us for many years. He has always been on top. He has always been brilliant for Chelsea.

"He is one of the best strikers in the world and he just keeps doing the same things."

Chelsea won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday but Cech admits that the victory was far from straightforward.

The Blues needed to be at their ruthless best to claim the win and the timing of their two goals was crucial, according to the goalkeeper.
"Wolves had their chances, they didn't take them and we killed them off," he added.

"There were times when they would have felt they could have got something out of the game and, at just the right times, we scored our goals."

King Louis Saha Exposes Weakness In Both Chelsea And John Terry

Even the most optimistic of Chelsea fans would no doubt have been wary about Wednesday night’s trip to Everton, and that caution was proven not to be misplaced as the Toffees proved too sticky a proposition for the Blues players who seemed unable to find top gear.

Goodison Park is not the easiest place to visit at the best of times, with the vocal local support always able to have an effect on proceedings, and a game against one of the more combative sides in the Premier League just three days after a victory against Arsenal that no doubt took a lot out of the players was always going to prove difficult to overcome.

It was perhaps a surprise then how brightly Chelsea started, with Florent Malouda blasting the ball past Tim Howard early on after a prime example of route one football that will no doubt have Arsene Wenger up in arms when he sees it.

Unfortunately for Blues fans, that was as good as it got. Everton quickly wrestled their way back into the game, and found themselves on level terms after Louis Saha took advantage of an uncharacteristic error from John Terry to nod home Landon Donovan’s corner from close range, in the process marking his 100th goal in English football.

As if to ram home the point that this was not a Chelsea side at the peak of their powers, Terry's defensive partner Ricardo Carvalho then proceeded to bring down the lively Donovan inside the box for as stone-wall a penalty as you are ever likely to see.

Fortunately for the central defender, Petr Cech was on hand (literally) to palm away a soft effort from the Frenchman that came to him at a very saveable height.

But despite that moment of respite, there was always the sense that this was going to be Everton's night.

Before the game, the omens might well have been seen to be favouring Chelsea. Didier Drogba may have reminded everyone at the weekend that Arsenal is the Premier League club against whom he is most effective, but Everton are second on his list, with the 31-year-old previously having scored seven goals against the Merseysiders.

The Toffees are similarly runners-up in Nicolas Anelka’s books, the Frenchman’s eight goals against them only second to the number he has notched in various games against Blackburn Rovers.

But in the end it was the Blues who finished second-best, as Saha took advantage over another Terry misjudgement to finally add his second of the night — and in the process make Chelsea the club against whom he has scored the most goals during his time in England (seven).

Before the game David Moyes had tipped his striker to cause problems for Chelsea's defence, and John Terry in particular, and the Scot's assessment was proven to be spot on. No doubt some pundits will be keen to link Terry's error-strewn display to his off-field problems, but the more obvious cause was the performance of the Frenchman and the effect of a vociferous home crowd.

At one point in the second half, around the time Ashley Cole was forced to depart with an injury that was a further blight on the night, Everton had their more illustrious opponents firmly on the ropes. It was one of those times when it is easy to see why Goodison Park is a daunting place for many to travel, with the crowd seeming to will their team forward and making it twice as hard for the away side to get the ball out of their own box, let alone their half.

Having gone behind, Chelsea struggled to summon the energy or invention to push themselves forward, and it wasn’t until Everton decided to shut up shop, retreat and hope they could hold on to what they had that the away side really managed to put some real pressure in their search for an equaliser.

Unfortunately it was too little, too late.

At least events elsewhere meant things could have been worse for Carlo Ancelotti and his men. Manchester United’s draw at Aston Villa (with Nani getting his marching orders) means at least the Blues are still top of the table, albeit only now by a point.

That does mean that the two sides’ meeting at Old Trafford at the beginning of April keeps assuming greater significance with every game.

But Sir Alex Ferguson’s men also still have to visit Goodison Park themselves next weekend, a fact that in itself should keep spirits up among Blues players and their fans.

On this evidence, it will certainly be no walk in the park.

Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal

Two first half goals from Didier Drogba were enough to send Chelsea back to the top of the Premier League as the Blues beat Arsenal 2-0 at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

Arsenal started brightly but it was Chelsea that opened the scoring. Gael Clichy conceded a cheap free-kick as he clattered into Nicolas Anelka on the right flank. Drogba floated the ball into the penalty area and Theo Walcott headed the ball out for a corner. Florent Malouda whipped it in and John Terry flicked the ball on to the back post, where an unmarked Drogba slotted home at the near post: 1-0 to Chelsea with seven minutes played.

Chelsea pierced the Arsenal back line on two separate occasions with through balls from midfield. Arsenal's defence held a good line and managed to catch both Anelka and Drogba offside, but both strikers were through on goal and both decisions were tight.

Arsenal responded well to this pressure and almost equalised through Andrey Arshavin. After a period of sustained possession, Cesc Fabregas spotted the Russian running off the shoulder of Branislav Ivanovic and fired a cross field pass into the penalty area. Arshavin ran onto the long ball and volleyed with his right foot, but his shot was straight at Petr Cech and the 'keeper saved with his foot.

Chelsea decimated Arsenal with a counter attacking goal, Frank Lampard drove at the heart of the Gunners defence and slid the ball through to Drogba on the right flank. The Ivorian entered the penalty and cut inside, slashing through the Arsenal defence before hammering the ball into the right hand side of the goal: 2-0.
Ashley Cole penetrated the Arsenal penalty area on the half hour mark. Walcott allowed the left-back to get a run on him and Cole was played through, the English winger managed to recover and challenge Cole to force him out wide before Almunia pushed the ball out for a corner.

Chelsea were looking increasingly comfortable, dropping off and allowing Arsenal possession in midfield. The Gunners were continually forced to move the ball out wide and attempt crosses into the box, these were repeatedly cleared by the Chelsea defence.

Arsenal had a couple of long range efforts that went well wide before the half was up, Clichy struck a dipping half-volley wide of the left-hand post before Cech watched an optimistic pot shot from Fabregas limp wide of the target.

The Gunners started the second half much in the same ilk as they ended the first, pushing forward but being contained by Chelsea's defence. They managed to win a couple of corners but made nothing of them.

Ivanovic powered through the Arsenal back line, riding a challenge by Alex Song before feeding the ball out to Anelka in the right hand side of the box. The Frenchman tried to check back onto his left foot but Clichy managed to stay strong and crowd out the former Gunner.

Chelsea were stepping up the pressure, and worked the ball out to the left flank where Michael Ballack tried to find the bottom right hand corner with an ambitious strike, but his shot was wayward and went well wide.

Samir Nasri had a glorious chance to pull one back in the 60th minute, Arsenal worked the ball beautifully with Nasri running in from the left flank and played a one-two with Song. Chelsea's midfield had moved to pincer the Cameroon international and he played a fantastic ball through to the Frenchman. Nasri looked to jink past the last defender, rather than attack the left hand side of the box, and Cole got back to make a vital challenge.

Arsene Wenger brought on Nicklas Bendtner in place of Theo Walcott and he had an immediate impact, winning Arsenal a free-kick on the edge of the box with some quick footwork. Fabregas fired low towards the bottom right-hand corner and Cech made a good save low to his left.

Arsenal were flying forwards, and a teasing ball from the left flank zipped across the Chelsea six yard box. Nasri almost got on the end of it, as Cech plucked the ball off his toe to make a brave save.

Chelsea weathered the storm and Wenger threw on Emmanuel Eboue and Tomas Rosicky to replace Bacary Sagna and Abou Diaby in an attempt to seize the initiative. Their first duty was to defend a Chelsea corner which Ballack headed well over the bar.

Arsenal were almost in again, as Arshavin curled the ball towards the back post from the left hand edge of the penalty area. Fabregas was back peddling and tried to head the ball back to Bendtner in the middle, but he couldn't control the header and Cech managed to race off his line in time to claw the ball clear.

Drogba almost completed his hat-trick with a wonderfully struck free-kick after a foul on Lampard by Song. The Ivorian hammered the ball towards the right-hand side of the goal from 25 yards, Almunia was static as the ball rifled off the cross bar and back out to safety.

Fabregas had a chance to grab a consolation as the game drew to a close, Nasri crossed into the centre from the right flank and the Spaniard flicked a header towards the far post. Cech looked to be struggling but the ball bounced just wide of the left-hand post.

The Gunners couldn't capitalise on the five minutes of stoppage time and Chelsea held out to win 2-0.

Jermain Defoe Hat-Trick Sends Spurs Into Fifth Round

A hat trick from Jermain Defoe ensured Tottenham Hotspur progressed to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup at the expense of Leeds United.

The away side started with plenty of intent and had no trouble creating chances. Sebastian Bassong and Peter Crouch were the first to spurn opportunities.

Michael Doyle had the home side's first sniff of goal with 13 minutes on the clock, forcing Gomes to make a save.

As the first half developed it seemed as if Jermain Defoe and Casper Ankergren were having their own personal duel.

The Danish keeper first squared up to the England man in the 12th minute when he shot wide.

Then 10 minutes later Defoe was put clean through Jermaine Jenas. With just the keeper to beat he fired straight at Ankergren.

With half an hour on the clock the situation was repeated. This time Lubomir Michalik stopped Defoe in his tracks before he could get his shot away.

After 34 minutes Defoe tested Ankergren again, and then he finally got his goal.

David Bentley, taking advantage of a rare run in the Spurs side, beat Andy Hughes down the right wing and pulled the ball back for Defoe. With his back to goal the striker turned and hit a rather sliced shot that looped in under the bar.

Then on the stroke of half time Leeds levelled matters. Jermaine Beckford's shot was acrobatically blocked by Gomes and Luciano Becchio was on hand to tap in.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first.

Defoe resumed his duel with Ankergren minutes after the restart, nearly beating the big Dane with a dipping shot.

Bentley was the fulcrum of the majority of his side's attacking verve, setting up chances for Defoe, Crouch and Kranjcar and also having a shot on goal himself.

Defoe thought he had given Tottenham the lead after 67 minutes but he was offside.

He didn't have to wait long to grab what proved to be the winning goal. To no great surpirse Bentley was the provider for his compatriot, who steered the cross into the net.

The bar denied Crouch a third, before Defoe sealed his hat trick.

He raced clear as Leeds searched for an equaliser, rounded Ankergren and prodded home.

The dream is over for Leeds United, but it has been an incredible journey.

Sagna - 6 - Kept Evra and Park quiet. Pushed forward to support Rosicky and almost set-up Fabregas for a drive in to the net before Nasri got in the way. Taken off for Bendtner.

Gallas - 5 - Brushed aside too many times for comfort by Rooney. Unable to exert enough physical pressure on United's star man to stop him retaining possession. Made one good tackle on Scholes.

Vermaelen - 6 - Importance of return from injury was clear to see. Had the guts and the engine to put his body on the line a number of times to deny United's attack. Stopped a goal-bound Nani shot on the line. Fortunate to see shot from edge of the box deflect in to United's net.

Clichy - 4 - Failed to stub out Nani. United's main source of inspiration ran rampant. Evidently still catching up after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Fabregas - 6.5 - Took advantage of Scholes' lack of pace before Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to put Carrick on him led to a subdued remainder of the game. Will regret not making the most of a number of opportunities to shoot.

Song - 5 - Ball-winning skill went out the window. Couldn't win back possession from United's midifeld trio. Booked for tackle on Nani.

Denilson - 4 - Fixture passed the young Brazilian by. Not up to the opposition's level. Fell asleep to commit the cardinal sin of allowing Rooney the space to charge in to the penalty area for his goal and offered no challenge on Nani for the opener. Hooked for Walcott.

Nasri - 5 - Let down by his team mates. Several times took up a promising position only for Arshavin and others not to play him in. Angered Fabregas when he blocked a cross that was bound for the Spaniard's right boot.

Arshavin - 4 - Decision making was all askew. Shot when he should have passed a number of times and when he did pull the trigger he failed to trouble Van der Sar.

Rosicky - 5 - Played on the periphery of the match. Hardly had an involvement of note. Substituted for Eboue.

Substitutes

Walcott - 5 - Pace got him in to decent positions only for his distribution to let him down. Same old story.

Eboue - 5 - Fell to his knees when faced by the on-rushing Rooney.

Bendtner - 6 - Provided a target for Arsenal's crosses but unable to nod in a goal.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Van der Sar - 6 - Surprisingly little to do as his team mates stamped their authority on the proceedings. Wrong-footed by Evans' deflection.

Rafael da Silva - 7 - Flanked Brown and occasionally motored up the pitch to support Nani. Got his foot in to the tackle in trademark fashion and kept it simple to ensure the win.

Jonny Evans - 8 - Untroubled by Arsenal's vertically challenged attack. Won a number of easy headers and important tackles. Made several no-nonsense clearances which steadied the ship. Unlucky to deflect Vermaelen's tame shot past Van der Sar.

Brown - 5 - Saved a worse ratings by Arshavin's ineptitude. Given the run-around by the Russian and on another day he would have been the weak link.

Evra - 7 - Less expressive going forward but a steady influence in defence. Quick to jump in to the tackle. Moved inside to smother Arsenal's forays in to the penalty area.

Scholes - 8 - Struggled at the start when at the base of the diamond to keep up with Fabregas. Exploded in to life after Ferguson's tactical shake up. Pushed on to support Rooney and ensured possession stayed with the visitor's. Was on old head for another when replaced by Giggs.

Carrick - 9 - Arguably the best performance of his United career. Always available for the ball, efficient in possession and aggressive in the tackle. Was the glue that held the midfield together.

Fletcher - 8 - Left the plaudits to Nani and Rooney but still shone. Charged up the pitch to add an extra man while never neglecting his defensive duties. A lesson in top class midfield play.

Nani - 9 - Rewarded Ferguson's faith in perfect style. Exhibited genius with an act of supreme skill to create the opener. Importantly, also kept his head to play in Rooney for the second. Constant thorn in Clichy's side. Thanked for his efforts by United bench after being taken off for Berbatov.

Rooney - 9 - Yet another outstanding display. Led the line like a veteran. Held the ball up with confidence then had the ability to pick holes in Arsenal's defence. Winning instinct on show when he drove up the pitch to place United in to a two-goal lead.

Park - 8 - Killed Arsenal on the counter attack. Linked play exceptionally well and finished with uncharacteristic aplomb for the third goal. Supported Evra when asked to defend. Taken off for Valencia.

Substitutes

Berbatov - 5 - Bumbled when played in by Valencia.

Giggs - 7 - Continued in Scholes' vein. Retained possession and looked to spring Arsenal's rearguard.

Valencia - 6 - Excuded confidence when he came on. Speed got him in to a number of good positions. Berbatov shold have scored when played in by the Ecuadorian.

John Terry Secures Victory As Blues Extend Lead

Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points after a comfortable victory against Burnley at Turf Moor. Goals by Nicolas Anelka and John Terry sealed the victory for the Blues who secured their first away league win since November.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti made just two changes to his side before the game; Alex replacing the rested Ricardo Carvalho whilst Yuri Zhirkov came in for Deco. The home side, who introduced new manager Brian Laws to the fans before kick off, also shuffled their pack with Robbie Blake and Andrey Bikey returning and new signing Leon Cort handed a debut.

Yet it was a quiet first half at Turf Moor with Chelsea looking much the better side, without having to be at their best, but with chances at a premium for both teams.

Indeed it took until almost the half-hour mark for the visitors to take the lead, but when the goal did come, it was a simple, slick move that revealed the visitors’ superior quality.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was the instigator, bowling the ball out to Joe Cole running free down the right. The midfielder then floated a fine cross into Florent Malouda in the box and with his first touch he cut it back to Anelka to sidefoot home past Brian Jensen. A fine move and one that had taken a mere 11 seconds from the ball leaving Cech’s gloves to ending up in the back of the home net.

In contrast the home side, pointless and goalless so far in 2010, were struggling to trouble the Londoners although John Terry became the first man in the book after, somewhat cynically, hauling down Blake when he looked set to burst free into the Chelsea half.

The visitors emerged early for the second half yet it was Burnley who were to stun the league leaders within minutes of the restart by grabbing an unlikely equaliser.

A decent ball upfield by Blake found Steven Fletcher who produced a good first touch, but still had Alex for company. The pair raced onto the pass and whilst the Chelsea defender was the first to the ball his attempted clearance only deflected off the midfielder who proceeded to hammer a confident finish past Cech.

The equaliser seemed to rouse Ancelotti’s men and five minutes later they thought they had re-established their lead after a mad scramble in the Burnley area. Anelka who had already caused mayhem found Malouda who set up Cole to head home from close range yet he was, rather harshly, adjudged to be offside and Burnley escaped.

Yet the visitors continued to crank up the pressure with Jensen forced to save well from a Frank Lampard free kick and an Alex header before a great tackle from Clarke Carlisle denied a rampaging Ashley Cole as he burst into the box.

With time running out Ancelotti sent on both Daniel Sturridge and Deco as he sought victory yet with less than 10 minutes to go, it was his captain, who was to provide the inspiration and secure the three points for the visitors,

A Lampard corner in from the right found Terry who powered a header home and past the despairing dive of Jensen to claim a goal that should provide some respite after a difficult week.

Burnley attempted to respond but another goal was beyond them and they remain in the bottom three. The Blues, meanwhile, held on for a victory that puts some distance between themselves and their nearest challengers Manchester United and Arsenal who clash tomorrow.

Official: Manchester United Midfielder Zoran Tosic Joins Koeln On Loan

Manchester United have confirmed that Zoran Tosic has moved to Bundesliga outfit FC Cologne on loan until the end of the season.

The German club will contribute half of Tosic's wages, but will have no option to sign the player permanently, although the loan deal can be extended by a further year reports Goal.com Germany.

The 22-year-old has made only five substitute appearances for United since joining a year ago, and has not had the impact hoped for at Old Trafford.

However, Tosic is confident that he will adapt to life at his new club: "The tempo in England is much higher, so it will be very easy for me, to get into the German competition."

The player remains optimistic though that his time at Cologne can help him win a more prevalent role with the Red Devils.

“I believe I haven’t had my final say at Manchester United and that my performances with Cologne will be my ticket back to Old Trafford," he told Serbian newspaper Blic.

Tosic will wear the number 14 shirt, and took part in his first training session with his new teammates on Wednesday afternoon.

Carlos Tevez proved another point to Sir Alex Ferguson but Manchester United pulled together to dump their bitter rivals out of the League Cup.

United exploded into life in the second half and brushed aside the fragmented challenge of Manchester City to win their place at Wembley.

Tevez was once again one of the standout performers on the pitch with his expertly taken finish threatening to steal the headlines. Unfortunately for him, his new supporting cast exhibited none of the collective ability of his former club-mates.

The team was king tonight. Roberto Mancini’s side looked every bit the work in progress you would expect after the dramatic investment lavished on them.

City’s time is to come and harsh lessons must be taken from the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford. Ferguson’s charges worked together to enact a blow to the Blue revolution taking hold in their other half of the city.

The midfield trio of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes gave a master class in the second half of perfectly balanced interplay. An intrinsic understanding of each other’s movement enabled United to take hold of the tie.
Through sharp passing and tenacity in the tackle, the threesome starved the visitors of possession. For Carrick and Scholes, this set the platform for a goal grabbing performance.

Scholes was in nappies the last time City won a trophy and it was he who began the charge to continue this run. Taking up a trademark position on the edge of the opposition box he rifled in the kind of shot that has typified his glory-filled career.

The teamwork that booked United’s passage to Wembley came to the fore when Carrick got on the scoresheet. A charge forward from the irrepressible Fletcher led to chaos in the City defence which was preyed upon with a cool finish.

Tevez’s goal threatened to throw a cog in the efficiently operated United machine. No such thought was entertained.

Detractors cite luck when analysing the Red Devils’ obstinacy but nine injury time goals this season alone speaks volumes for their will to win. It was left to Wayne Rooney to nod home the third goal to send Old Trafford in to ecstasy.

Money has catapulted City up the standings. Time is required before they can hope to compete with United for silverware.

South Korean Star Ku Ja Cheol's Move To Blackburn Rovers

The proposed move of South Korea international Ku Ja Cheol to Blackburn Rovers has been put on the backburner according to reports in Seoul.

Throughout January, the English Premier League club have been linked with the highly-rated 20 year-old but any move will not happen in this transfer window.

“Negotiations with Blackburn have ended,” a source close to the player told Sports Seoul newspaper.

“The club was very positive about Ku but wanted to see more of him before making an offer.”

The Jeju United midfielder has spent most of the month in South Africa and Spain in a three-week training camp with South Korea. He returned home on Monday.

The report claims that after the Finland game on January 18, Ku was supposed to head to Blackburn for a trial but the weather made it difficult. Instead the club sent a scout to see him in that game and against Latvia.

“The scout wanted to see more of the player and after the Latvia match, the club wanted him to go to Blackburn to see him in action,” said the source and added, “But with the East Asian Championships starting soon, our position was that there wasn’t time… so we refused the offer."

Sports Seoul claims that Blackburn are still interested in the player and will send a scout to Tokyo to watch him play in the East Asian championships next week for South Korea against Japan, China and Hong Kong and will also watch him in action in the K-League.

“Ku is a little frustrated but hopes that there will be a better outcome in the future,' said the source. "At the moment, he is just focusing on the World Cup.

Chelsea could be in danger of losing Nicolas Anelka, after contract talks stalled for the fourth time, according to reports.

The Frenchman has been in sensational form this season and has really settled into life at Stamford Bridge, but with just 18 months left on his current contract, the club are eager to tie him down to a new long-term deal.

Forming a formidable partnership with Didier Drogba, Anelka has bagged himself 11 goals so far this season.

With the Blues keen to convince the nomadic Frenchman to commit his future to the club, it appears talks over a new deal have again stalled.

Discussions between the two parties have been ongoing for some time now, but it seems they are still some way apart.

As things stand there is just a '10 per cent chance' of an agreement being reached according Sky Sports.

Anelka has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe including Arsenal, Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool, but it seems that the Frenchman finally feels at home at Stamford Bridge.

If no new deal is agreed, Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti will have to decide whether to cash in now on the 30-year-old or risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires in 18 months time.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has pleaded for some consistency from referees after questioning his side's lack of penalties this season.

The Gunners have only been handed one spot-kick since August, and that was against the opponents they face on Sunday for the fourth round of the FA Cup, Stoke City.

In response to strong words from the Stoke camp that Arsenal are to expect a dog-fight, Wenger has stated he cannot explain why his men have not been receiving more penalties.

Speaking to the Press Association, the 60-year-old Frenchman stated: “I don’t get upset by our lack of penalties any more – it just glides over me.

“I just want the referee to give a penalty when it’s a penalty. I don’t want to complain to the FA.”

When asked if his men could still handle the English game without as many decisions going in their favour, Wenger was keen to emphasise that his side have the grit to deal with it, but shouldn’t have to with the players they possess.

“We can deal with it, but I believe that the players who play like [Cesc] Fabregas should be protected because you don’t come to watch players kick him,” he added.

Meanwhile, defender William Gallas has escaped punishment from the FA for a heavy challenge on Bolton Wanderer’s Mark Davies.

Carlos Tevez scored twice against his old club as City came from behind to take a narrow advantage into next week's Carling Cup semi-final second leg.

Manchester United led through Ryan Giggs' 17th-minute tap-in but City drew level after Rafael was adjudged to have hauled back Craig Bellamy inside the box.

Tevez gleefully rammed home the penalty, then turned home Vincent Kompany's cross from close range after the interval.

Tevez Dedicates Manchester United Victory To The Fans

“Obviously the talk was about Carlos [Tevez] before the game and he has done the talking on the pitch today with a great performance,” said Barry.

“That's the way it's written sometimes and the way Carlos works, he deserves it.”

The Manchester City midfielder believes there is still work to be done, however, if the Citizens are to progress to the final.

“It's still in the balance, half-time obviously, we know we can expect a tough game at Old Trafford. They're going to push on and give all they can and we've got to expect a battle again,” added the former Villan.

“We knew as individuals we were all going to have to dig deep and Shay's performed well.

Lampard's achievements during his 14-year professional career have been recognised by the FWA as he received the annual award at an event at London's Lancaster Hotel.The England international's honours include two Barclays Premier League titles and two FA Cups, along with 76 caps for his country.

He joins previous winners of the award that include Bobby Moore, Sir Alex Ferguson and Alan Shearer.

"It's unexpected for me, I'm not quite getting towards the end of my career yet but I'm very proud of what I've achieved and to get recognition for what I've achieved from the FWA is a huge thing," said Lampard.

"The football writers are so hard to please. They see us every week. They are the critics of football and I'm very proud that they have seen me in this light.

"I'm really enjoying my football at the moment. You get to 31 and you know you are past the middle part of your career now and I just want to make it last as long as you can."

Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho heaped praise on Lampard, who he worked with at Stamford Bridge.

"I am so proud to have worked with such a man," said the Inter Milan manager.

"When I am asked who are the best players I have worked with, I will always say that Frank Lampard is amongst the greatest. Not because he has been successful but because he is driven every day to become better."

Chelsea 7-2 Sunderland: Nicola Anelka runs Black Cats ragged

Chelsea put hapless Sunderland to the sword with a 7-2 demolition at Stamford Bridge.

Nicholas Anelka and Frank Lampard helped themselves to two apiece while Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and Michael Ballack all chipped in as Carlo Ancelotti’s side ran riot in their first league outing of 2010.

Substitute Bolo Zenden and Darren Bent netted second half consolations for the injury-hit visitors.

Steve Bruce, looking for a first win in eight Premier League games partnered Kenwyne Jones with England hopeful Darren Bent in an attacking 4-4-2 formation.

In the absence of their African contingent, Chelsea opted to play Anelka as a lone striker supported by Joe Cole and Malouda.

The home side began much the brighter and wasted no time in breaking the deadlock.

Michael Ballack sent Anelka on his way having picked the ball up in the middle of the park, and the Frenchman provided a cool finish past Marton Fulop on eight minutes.

Chelsea’s defence has been unusually porous this season and Sunderland could have been level straight from the restart.

Petr Cech was hesitant when coming for a teasing centre and was fortunate to see the ball avoid the attentions of Sunderland’s frontline.

But the game was all but over as a contest inside 20 minutes.

Malouda was afforded far too much room and his firm drive beat Fulop to double Chelsea’s advantage.

Sunderland were unable to cope with the pace and purpose of the home side’s attack but their third came from the unlikely source of Ashley Cole.

With a typical marauding run forward the England left-back showed great composure in the area to deftly flick over Fulop on 22 minutes.

Shell shocked Sunderland rallied and began to compete in the middle of the park but Chelsea were always a danger on the counter attack.

There was no respite for Steve Bruce’s beleaguered defence as Lampard made it four on the half hour mark.

Cole provided a teasing cross into the Sunderland box and Lampard slid in to claim his tenth goal of the season.

Sunderland’s best chance of the half fell to Daryl Murphy but his shot was well blocked by Cech minutes before the interval.

Chelsea began the second half in the same vein and were able to break down Sunderland’s whimpering backline at will.

Within minutes of the restart Anelka could have bagged his second but was denied by an outstanding save from Fulop.

The Sunderland keeper had endured a torrid first half but brilliantly flicked Anelka’s effort onto the cross bar.

However he was soon picking the ball out of his net once again as Ballack added a fifth.

Sunderland’s defence once again failed to spot Chelsea’s midfield runners and the German took full advantage to place his header beyond Fulop on 50 minutes.

In a breathless passage of play the visitors did manage to claw one back.

Substitute Zenden, replacing the anonymous Steed Malbranque, showed a rare touch of class in the final third to fire past Cech for his first goal in Sunderland colours.

Anelka was not to be denied his second of the day and capitalised on hesitant goalkeeping from Fulop to add Chelsea’s sixth with 20 minutes still to play.

And he should have had a hat trick with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining but somehow found the sprawling Fulop from four yards out.

Joe Cole should have scored in the closing stages but hit the post from six yards.

Lampard did add a seventh minutes from time as he headed home Anelka's cross.

Bolton Wanderers finished only two points above the relegation zone and this unexpected three points early in the season was pivotal to the Trotters' campaign. David Beckham lost possession on the edge of his own area and Kevin Nolan's resulting shot deflected past Fabien Barthez and into the net. "The defending against an outstanding world class team like United was fantastic," said Trotters manager Sam Allardyce whose side kept out Ruud van Nistelrooy and co in the evening encounter.

Arsenal 0-3 Middlesbrough 14/04/01

An Arsenal side featuring the likes of Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry were brushed aside at Highbury. The Gunners created a number of chances but this was a freak Premier League encounter featuring own-goals from the Gunners' Brazilian duo Edu and Sylvinho. Hamilton Ricard's 58th minute strike put the icing on the cake for Terry Venables' side who finished the season in 14th place.

A Dwight Yorke hat-trick in 20 first-half minutes propelled United to victory against their old rivals at Old Trafford. Thierry Henry had levelled Yorke's opener after a slick move but United put their foot down and went in at the break 5-1 up as Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer built on their team-mate's treble. Teddy Sheringham rubbed salt into Arsenal wounds late on. Wenger's troops would finish ten points behind champions United in second place.

Bradford City 1-0 Liverpool 14/05/00

This shock result had extra significance as it took place on the final day of the season and saved Paul Jewell's team from relegation. David Wetherall was a colossus all match and rose to head in a free-kick from Gunnar Halle on 12 minutes. Bradford were battling relegation all season, while this defeat denied Liverpool a Champions League place. "That's something I will remember for the rest of my life," said Wetherall, expressing the magnitude of what he and Bradford had achieved.

Southampton 3-3 Liverpool 26/08/00

This match looked all over as Liverpool led 3-0 at The Dell with barely quarter of an hour remaining. Two goals by Michael Owen (24 and 64 minutes) and one from Sami Hyypia (55) seemed to have put Gerard Houllier's side on the way to three points. Even when Marian Pahars pulled one back on 74 minutes, it seemed little more than a consolation. But with five minutes on the clock, Moroccan international Tahar El Khalej set the nerves jangling and, in a fevered atmosphere, Latvian international Pahars grabbed an unlikely equaliser in stoppage time. If the match had gone on a few more minutes, Glenn Hoddle's now rampant side might well have won it.
